Learn to Listen and Listen to Learn, 4 Important Car Salesman Tips When we are different, it gets the customer’s attention. They listen more, talk more, and eventually buy more, and they are glad they did. One of the most important things I have learned about customer service is to always look at the person across from you as if they are a family member, then treat them accordingly. As F&I professionals, we sometimes lose sight of the simple fact that we are in the business of customer service. And the ultimate test of customer service is whether you are helping the customer make good buying decisions or just trying to sell something. They know the difference. In a competitive environment, the way we treat our customers and the experience we provide during the buying process is essentially the only thing that can set us apart. F&I is typically the […]

New-Vehicle Sales in 2019 Forecast

NADA Forecasts 16.8 Million New-Vehicle Sales in 2019 TYSONS, Va. – The National Automobile Dealers Association, a trade group representing U.S. franchised new-car dealerships, today released its annual sales forecast for new light vehicles in 2019. “We’re forecasting sales of 16.8 million new cars and light trucks in 2019,” said Patrick Manzi, NADA senior economist, at an industry briefing. “This would represent a falloff in sales of about 1.1 percent compared to 2018.” Based on a strong November, new-vehicle sales are expected to reach 17 million units in 2018, which would mark the fourth straight year of U.S. auto sales above 17 million units. “This was unexpected. We were expecting sales to fall off a little more than they have this year, but then the new tax law was passed which put more money in the pockets of consumers and they certainly purchased new vehicles at dealer showrooms,” Manzi added. “The […]

With some 550 companies exhibiting at this year’s NADA Show Expo, China’s GAC Motor definitely has an edge on getting attention: It’s looking to develop partnerships with dealers. At NADA, “we hope we can lay a solid foundation for the future sales network through seeking potential partners and hearing advice from friendly and effective communications with experienced dealers,” says GAC Motor President Yu Jun. Other automakers also are exhibiting at the NADA Show, including Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Ford, GM, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Toyota. But dealers are always particularly intrigued when a new automaker enters the field, and GAC plans to start selling its vehicles in the U.S. market by the fourth quarter of 2019. Of course, what really piques dealers’ interest is a product, which is why GAC plans to display three to five premium models at the show. […]

Electric Vehicles to Double by 2021

Electric Vehicles to Double by 2021

Electric Vehicles to Double Every Year U.S. electric-vehicle sales forecasted by the Edison Electric Institute would require the presence of more than 9 million charging ports by 2030.   WASHINGTON — An association representing America’s privately held electric companies has released a report predicting the number of EVs on U.S. roads will double by 2021. In “Electric Vehicle Sales Forecast and the Charging Infrastructure Required Through 2030,” authors Adam Cooper and Kellen Schefter of the Edison Electric Institute predict the sales of 1 million EVs in the next three years, matching the number sold over the past eight. “Automakers are responding to customer demand and are developing more EV models, including both plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), that are increasingly cost-competitive with internal combustion engines,” the authors wrote, in part. “In addition, customers are purchasing EVs in record numbers, and electric companies are working with […]

Sedans Ranking in Used-Car Market

Sedans Ranking in Used-Car Market / Sedans Get Second Chance in Used-Car Market Mid-size sedans such as the Mazda6 may have fallen out of favor among new-car buyers, but the off-lease volume and competitive in-vehicle technology, among other factors, have created compelling value in the pre-owned segment. (Bobit) — A glut of off-lease units and vanishing factory incentives are creating a value and affordability gap that is pushing more car buyers toward pre-owned units, experts say, and their interest extends to vehicle types that have fallen out of favor with new-car buyers and manufacturers. The latest reports from Black Book and Jumpstart Automotive Media (divs. Hearst) show value retention and website traffic trending up among sedans throughout 2018 — the same year in which a parade of sedans built by Ford, General Motors, and other manufacturers was given expiration dates as consumers continue to demonstrate a preference for SUVs, CUVs, […]

Toyota Corolla All-Wheel-Drive

Toyota Corolla All-Wheel-Drive

Will Toyota Add All-Wheel-Drive To The Corolla Gas & Hybrid? An AWD Corolla would certainly make sense. Toyota was very busy during the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. The Japanese brand revealed the Camry and Avalon TRD, the 2020 Corolla Hybrid, and the Prius with all-wheel-drive. Toyota’s AWD-e system is rather unique because it doesn’t feature a physical connection to the rear wheels. Instead, a rear-mounted electric motor provides power to the rear wheels, creating all-wheel drive. The AWD-e system made its US debut on the Lexus UX250h, where it produces a total output of 176 horsepower. Now, the system’s potential application on other Toyota vehicles is being considered. According to Autoguide, Jack Hollis, general manager of Toyota Motor North America, didn’t say no to the idea of this system being used on the Corolla. “There’s no doubt that it is [being considered],” Hollis said. “You’ve heard from Akio Toyota, our […]

Toyota Remains Very Bullish on the Overall Market

Toyota Remains Very Bullish on the Overall Market says Toyota North America CEO, Jim Lentz. Toyota’s Lentz is still bullish, but concerned about ‘crazy’ trade implications DETROIT — The trade and tariff environment under U.S. President Donald Trump poses the greatest potential danger to the auto industry, says Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz. While Toyota remains “very, very bullish” on the overall market, Lentz said “some crazy” potential implications from trade and Trump’s investigation into the national-security impact of car imports “could be devastating to the industry.” Trump’s tariffs on aluminum and steel under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 have increased the Japanese automaker’s costs by 40 percent, he said. That’s despite more than 90 percent of its steel is sourced from the U.S. “Everybody is seeing cost-push on a per-unit basis of anywhere from $100 to $400, just on steel alone,” he said. ‘New’ NAFTA deal  […]

If you live where the snow flies, you’ve seen overconfident drivers blow by you on a snowy road and wondered if—and maybe even secretly hoped—they’d end up in a ditch. CNCDA: ‘Care by Volvo’ Violates Payment Packing, Franchise Rules Volvo’s two-year subscription program is under fire in California, where the head of the state’s new-car dealer association contends the program violates state laws against payment packing and dealer-factory competition. SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California New Car Dealers Association has warned Volvo that the factory’s vehicle-subscription program could be in violation of several state laws and called for an immediate halt statewide. CNCDA President Brian Maas outlined the association’s concerns with “Care by Volvo” in a letter addressed to Volvo Cars USA CEO Anders Gustafsson. “In light of the understandable concerns of our Volvo dealer members, we ask that you immediately suspend the CbV program in California and work with your dealer partners to design a subscription program that strengthens your relationship with dealers and complies with California law,” Maas wrote, in part, requesting a response by Dec. 21.
